Our digital environment can be threatened by various challenges, such as online disinformation, which causes an erosion of trust in institutions and media. The rise of hate speech, hate crimes and cyber violence also puts at risk our fundamental rights online. Hate speech, whether online or offline, poses a threat to democracy and human rights. Cyber violence and hate speech online occur on a variety of platforms: social media, web content and discussion sites. Unlawful online citizen surveillance, the right to be safeguarded from abuse, the right to freedom of expression, and the right to be heard have an important role in this part of the course. The implications of the digital age for children’s rights have yet to be worked out. Therefore, protecting and empowering children and young people in the digital environment is particularly important.
